A popular spot among writers, artists and politicians, Café Nicola is an establishment not to be missed in central Lisbon. Founded in 1787 by Italian Nicola Breteiro, the Nicola was given its permanent name in 1929, when it started operating out of its current building in Rossio. It boasts an unmistakable façade designed by the architect Norte Junior, a statue of the poet Bocage sculpted by Marcelino de Almeida, and the oil paintings of Fernando Santos. Currently working as a café/restaurant, Nicola remains faithful to the spirit of social gatherings and literary creation that have made it a must visit place.
